Castro Marim Golf & Country Club

Previous Next

Opened in 2001 this challenging 18-hole Atlantic Course is part of a 225 hectare property development near the historcal town of Castro Marim, close to the Spanish border with breathtaking mountain, river and sea views. It's the most easterly course on the Algarve and overlooks the broad estuary of the Guadiana river, which forms the border between Portugal and Spain.

The 1st hole 375 meters downhill, par-4 may not appear too strenous, but as you stand on the elevated tee you can soon see why it is rated stroke index 4. The fairway is narrow and lined with umbrella pine trees. It drops away, but climbs to an elevated green.

On the back nine, the 11th - a par-4 323 metres - can be deceptive. Once again, a well struck drive may find the water protecting the green. This is a good hole, but it is brain not brawn that will secure you here.

The par-3 17th hole 130 metres is almost always subject to onshore prevailing winds off the sea, with bunkers in front and a lake behind, think carefully about what club to take.

Another interesting feature of this course at Castro Marim Golfe and Country Club is the irrigation system. The entire course is irrigated by means of an underground so called "leaky pipe" system. This enables golfers to play at times when courses with conventional aerial sprinklers would normally be unviable.

Driving Instructions:

Take the Via do Infante motorway eastwards. Leave at Castro Marim exit and immediately turn north on the Alcoutin road. You will shortly see the sign for the course.
